8 September 2024, TU Wien & online
During EuroCarto 2024, the Working Group on Inclusive Cartography hosted an inspiring workshop on Barrier-Free Cartography. This hybrid event brought together 32 participants from various countries, some joining online as early as 4:00 AM in their local time zone. The workshop attracted researchers and practitioners from other ICA commissions as well as newcomers to the Association’s work.
Despite some initial technical hiccups, the event was a success in its hybrid format. The workshop kicked off with a warm welcome from co-chair Vincent van Altena, who highlighted the group’s mission and drew on various sources of inspiration. The recently established Working Group expands the focus of the former Commission on Maps and Graphics for Blind and Partially Sighted People to include a broader range of users beyond just the blind and visually impaired.
The workshop featured 11 insightful presentations, organized into three sessions with similar topics. The main focus was on tactile cartography, but sessions also covered 3D printed models, participatory mapping, and human subject testing. Participants found it interesting to share knowledge and see that others often face similar challenges. The success of the workshop led to enthusiastic calls for making it an annual event.
The event concluded with closing remarks from co-chair Jakub Wabiński, who thanked all presenters and highlighted the critical need for inclusive cartography and the ongoing efforts to make maps accessible to all. He encouraged anyone interested in joining this vibrant community to sign up as an active member or join the mailing list.
